The terraced bed on the south side of Mary's home features plants that love hot and dry conditions and attract pollinators. Ornamental grasses, bearded and Siberian iris, common mullein, Linum perenne (blue flax) from Mary's grandmother, Knautia macedonica (crimson scabious), Sedum sarmentosum (stringy stonecrop), and Allium lusitanicum 'Blue Skies' grow well here. The porcupine grass has since been replaced with Andropogon gerardii 'Red October' (big bluestem).
