"Welcome to Caribou Gardens"
We live in a small community on Caribou Lake, close to Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. My home has 300 feet (100m) of water frontage and 1 acre (0.4 hectare) of gardens. The climate is USDA Hardiness Zone 5. Caribou Gardens was the name given by a good friend of mine Pat Holmes after the beautiful crystal clear lake we live on.
I worked for the provincial government for more than 38 years. I have been retired for three years and moved to the lake full time, following my retirement. I have always loved the outdoors, and when not gardening you might find me in the woods or on the lake.
My love of gardening came from my late mother, Marie. After her passing I created a heart shaped bed in her memory (photo shown below).
About 10 years ago I joined the Nova Scotia Daylily Society and started my obsession with daylilies. I would like to thank Alan Banks, Coral Kincaid and Carol Harvey - all members of the Nova Scotia Daylily Society - for their help and encouragement. My collection is now over 700 varieties.
Besides daylilies, I have many perennials, including more than 170 varieties of hosta and 30 varieties of hydrangea. My collection of bird houses and antique farm equipment is scattered
throughout the gardens. My wife Christa helps with the spring and fall cleanup, does all the vegetable gardens and prepares the planters.
Thanks to friends Randy Audrey, Mary and Steve Ruxton for the photos herein and Mary Hindle for nominating the garden.
