I had very little experience or interest in gardening in the shade when we moved here. It seemed to me that nothing blooms there, so what's the point? Tom was insistent that we do it - and he can be very persuasive. Also, two gardening acquaintances got wind of our project and my frustration, and gifted us untold numbers of plants for shade, both common and rare. This is now one of my favorite spots. The temperature can be 15 degrees cooler when the sun is high, and the mood here is very tranquil. Critters love it here, too. We have plenty of toads, box turtles, snakes, and squirrels in this area.
